China Earthquake today

BEIJING  A series of strong earthquakes struck China's western Qinghai province Wednesday, killing at least 300 people, injuring thousands and burying many others under toppled houses in a mountainous rural area, officials and state media said. The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude 6.9 temblor struck an area in southern Qinghai, near Tibet, on Wednesday morning and was followed by several aftershocks. The main quake sent residents fleeing as it toppled houses made of mud and wood, said Karsum Nyima, the Yushu county television station's deputy head of news, speaking by phone with broadcaster CCTV. "In a flash, the houses went down. It was a terrible earthquake," he said. "In a small park, there is a Buddhist tower and the top of the tower fell off. ... Everybody is out on the streets, standing in front of their houses, trying to find their family members." The quake hit the county of Yushu, a Tibetan area in Qinghai's south, said the China Earthquake Networks Center, which measured the quake's magnitude at 7.1. A local government Web site put the county's population in 2005 at 89,300, a community of mostly herders and farmers. State broadcaster CCTV said the death toll had risen to about 300, with an additional 8,000 people injured. The China Earthquake Administration said phone lines were down, hindering rescue efforts, while workers were racing to release water from a reservoir where a crack had formed after the quake. In Jiegu, a township near the epicenter, more than 85 percent of houses had collapsed, while large cracks have appeared on buildings still standing, the official Xinhua News Agency cited Zhuohuaxia, a local publicity official, as saying. "The streets in Jiegu are thronged with panic and full of injured people, with many of them bleeding from their injuries," he said. There were also students buried under the debris of a collapsed vocational school, Zhuohuaxia said. State television showed footage of paramilitary police using shovels to dig around a house with a collapsed wooden roof. A local military official, Shi Huajie, told state broadcaster CCTV rescuers were working with limited equipment. "The difficulty we face is that we don't have any excavators. Many of the people have been buried and our soldiers are trying to pull them out with human labor," Shi said. "It is very difficult to save people with our bare hands." Five thousand tents and 100,000 thick, cotton coats and heavy blankets were being sent to help survivors cope with strong winds and near-freezing temperatures of around 43 degrees Fahrenheit (6 degrees C), the Qinghai provincial government said in a statement. Wu Yong, a local military chief, said medical workers also were urgently needed but that roads leading to the airport had been badly damaged by the quake, creating difficulties for people and supplies to be flown in. He said rescue efforts were hindered by frequent aftershocks and strong winds. The epicenter of the first quake was located 235 miles (380 kilometers) south-southeast of Golmud, a large city in Qinghai, at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), the USGS said. Ten minutes later, the area was hit by a magnitude 5.3 quake, which was followed after two minutes by a temblor measuring 5.2, according to the U.S. agency. Both the subsequent earthquakes were measured at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers). Another quake, measuring 5.8, was recorded at 9:25 a.m. Xinhua cited officials at the China Earthquake Networks Center as saying at least 18 aftershocks have been reported and that more temblors exceeding magnitude 6 were likely to occur in the coming days. In 2008, a magnitude-7.9 quake in Sichuan province left almost 90,000 people dead or missing.

Stampede

A stampede broke out at a Hindu temple in northern India on Thursday as thousands of people jostled one another to get free clothes and food, leaving at least 63 people dead and dozens more injured, officials said. Most of the victims were women and children, officials said. The force of the stampede was so great that it knocked down a gate at the temple compound in Kunda, a small town 110 miles (180 kilometers) southeast of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state. About 44 worshippers were injured in the crush of people at a temple belonging to a popular local religious leader, said Ashok Kumar, a senior government official. Thousands of farmers and villagers had gathered at the temple around noon to receive free goods to mark the anniversary of the death of the wife of the religious leader, Kripalu Maharaj, said Brij Lal, a local police official. By late afternoon police had cleared the compound and started the process of identifying the bodies, Kumar said. Hundreds of people gathered at a nearby hospital for news of their family members. She had just wandered in to see what was happening, said Gudal, a 38-year-old farmer whose 7-year-old daughter, Ranjana, was killed. Gudal, who uses only one name, wept as she spoke. Leelawati, 32, cried as she waited to see the body of her 11-year-old daughter, Lakshmi, who also died in the stampede. Deadly stampedes are a relatively common occurrence at temples in India, where large crowds  sometimes hundreds of thousands of people  congregate in small areas lacking facilities to control big gatherings. In 2008, more than 145 people died in a stampede at a remote Hindu temple at the foothill of the Himalayas. Associated Press reporter Biswajeet Banerjee contributed to this story from Lucknow.

Tsunami in Chile

SANTIAGO, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Three strong aftershocks jolted Chile Wednesday four days after the 8.8-magnitude earthquake, sparking panic in the south American country. An aftershock measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck late Wednesday following two aftershocks measuring 6.0 and 5.9 respectively earlier in the day. In the southern-central town of Concepcion, one of the hardest-hit cities in Saturday's quake, sirens were heard and hundreds of people rushed out their shelters to higher ground. Chilean authorities issued a tsunami warning after the two earlier aftershocks, but later lifted the alert. However, most of the people in the affected areas said they would still choose to stay outside during the following days, out of fear of more aftershocks. Saturday's 8.8-magnitude earthquake has killed 802 people, Chilean Vice Interior Minister Patricio Rosende said Wednesday, adding the death toll could rise as rescue work is ongoing. According to the National Office of Emergency, the number of affected people was probably 2 million. As Chile saw a flurry of aftershocks, President Michelle Bachelet called on the people to remain calm and urged them "to work together on the recovery of Chile." She said Chile is ready to recover from the disaster. "We are in conditions to stand up again. This is a moment when we cannot be defeated by the adversity," she said. The president said the reconstruction of the country "is everybody's work" and at this moment her government's main task is to restore basic services as soon as possible in the most affected zones. Bachelet also reaffirmed her objection to looting in the last days in the quake-hit areas. The Chilean government on Tuesday extended an 8:00 p.m.-to-noon curfew to begin at 6:00 p.m. to crack down on looting in Concepcion. Authorities also added three towns -- Talca, Cauquenes and Constitucion -- to the curfew list to suppress looting in those areas. Chile has increased deployment of troops to 14,000 across quake-hit areas in an attempt to quell clashes and restore order. Meanwhile, international aid has been pouring into the quake-ravaged country. Food, water, tents, blankets and medical equipment are arriving at Santiago international airport as operation at the airport began to restore after terminals were damaged in the quake, disrupting incoming and outgoing flights. Chile's neighboring countries also felt Saturday's mega quake, such as Peru. To learn a lesson from this disaster, Peruvian President Alan Garcia on Wednesday unveiled a national seismic prevention plan, since the country has a history of strong earthquakes. The program aims to prepare residents who live in urban areas for possible consequences of an earthquake of great magnitude, Garcia said. Apart from causing tsunamis worldwide, the massive earthquake might have changed entire Earth's rotation and shifted the Earth's axis, according to scientists at NASA of the United States. They said the quake should have moved Earth's figure axis by about 3 inches (8 cm or 27 milliarcseconds) so that it might have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds. The Boston Bruins opened the final day before the trade deadline tied with the New York Rangers with 65 points for the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference, and general manager Peter Chiarelli has already been busy Wednesday morning, making a pair of deals to help get his team back into the postseason. After sending Derek Morris to the Phoenix Coyotes -- for a 2011 fourth-round draft pick -- in a cap clearing move, the Bruins dealt Byron Bitz, Craig Weller and a second-round pick to the Florida Panthers for shot-blocking defenseman Dennis Seidenberg (pictured) and Matt Bartkowski. The 28-year-old Seidenberg is one of the league's best shot blockers, leading the NHL with 179 -- 26 more than the No. 2 player on the list, Andy Sutton. While he's probably an upgrade over Morris on the blue line, this trade does little to remedy Boston's biggest issue: goal-scoring. The Bruins are the lowest-scoring team in the NHL with just 150 goals. Swapping Morris for Seidenberg does leave Boston with some extra salary cap room, and with still over three hours before the deadline there's still time to add something up front. For the Panthers, it's yet another draft pick thrown into the pool, while they also get Bitz, a hulking 25-year-old forward who's not afraid to throw his weight around or drop the gloves. Florida has acquired three second-round picks over the past three weeks, and with Seidenberg and Jordan Leopold already shipped out, all eyes are now on goaltender Tomas Vokoun. The other team in this mix is Phoenix, which acquired Morris for, let's be honest, next-to-nothing. Considering the going rate for rent-a-vets leading up to the deadline, a fourth-round pick in 2011 is a pretty sweet deal for a team that nobody pictured as a buyer at the start of the season. Morris has previously spent parts of five seasons with the Coyotes and was traded to the Rangers at last year's deadline for Dmitri Kalanin, Nigel Dawes and Petr Prucha.

Eri Yoshida

It's been said Eri Yoshida grew up watching videos of Tim Wakefield's knuckleball to perfect her craft, and now she may be headed to the men's pro leagues. Yoshida, an 18-year-old knuckleball professional pitcher from Japan, has been extended an offer to play for the Chico Outlaws of the Independent Golden Baseball League, the Japan Times reports. She could be the first Japanese woman to play professional baseball in a men's league in the United States, according to the report. Yoshida came to Florida this week to finally meet Wakefield. "I never thought I could ever feel this happy," Yoshida said of the meeting. Some are already asking if Eri Yoshida could be the next Tim Wakefield.
Eighteen-year-old knuckleballer Eri Yoshida, the first woman drafted by a Japanese team, was in Fort Myers today to meet the man who inspired her to pitch.

Despite no reported accidents or injuries, here's everything you need to know about the big Nissan recall announced today. 540,000 cars have been recalled by Nissan Motor over faulty brake pedal issues that may also affect the fuel gauge. As the AFP reports this morning, the recall covers "the Titan, Armada and Infiniti QX56 built from 2005 to 2008, and the Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra produced between January and March 2006 and between October 2007 and January 2008." The brake pedals could have faulty components that can cause the pedals to wobble, AFP reported. The WSJ notes that the move comes on the heels of Nissan recalling more than 70,00 vehicles in Japan over engine electric cables. The vast majority of vehicles, some 418,865, are U.S. models. Here's more from the AFP: "Vehicles at higher mileage levels may have fuel gauges which incorrectly indicate the amount of fuel in the tank. This may result in the vehicle running out of fuel while the gauge reads greater than empty." Nissan said the problem were caused by its suppliers.

Lisa Ellis was affronted by the notion that Marie might have read too much into the picture she found on Wyclefs cell phone. Lisa Ellis told reporters that the picture that was taken of her nude with her hands covering her privates has somehow found its way into the wrong hands and that the picture was on Wyclefs phone had nothing to do with what Marie might be concluding. Marie has asked Wyclef to fire Lisa Ellis and there seemed to be no hesitation from Lisa in resigning from her position either. Lisa Ellis was of the view that she was thinking about resignation in any case since Wyclef wasnt very good at following her advice. When asked how Lisa felt about the whole fiasco her friend said that she was mortified since she already had a boyfriend and this whole scene might complicate matters between the two. Lisa Ellis resigned from her managing position around three weeks ago. The pop star Wyclef who has been busy with his own agenda of reviving Haitis devastated state married his wife Marie some sixteen years ago in the year 1994. Wyclef who is now thirty-seven years of age renewed his wedding vows last year in August and has a daughter with Marie who is a fashion designer.

Lasix is a diuretic and is given to the patients to get the extra water of the body. As the water levels drop, serum potassium levels are also dropped and the Dennis daughters maintained that this exactly was the reason of the death of their mother. Meanwhile a T.V. film was made on Donna Yaklichs case. Dennis daughters blamed that Donna had used the film money to hire an attorney and had launched a media campaign to deceive the justice system and they may be right. As there were three persons involved in the incident and the main culprit was Donna, however Donna was set free where as the sentence was not reduced for either Charles or Edward.

The 3.7-inch AMOLED display carries over, but things get interesting on the software side: not only do you get HTC's freshly-updated Sense with Friend Stream, you also get Flash 10.1 compatibility, which means you need every clock cycle of that 1GHz more than you ever thought you would. Unfortunately, North Americans, you're getting screwed on this one for the time being -- HTC is only announcing that it'll be "broadly available" throughout Europe and Asia in the early part of the second quarter, while it'll come to Australia via Telstra. Before the second and final day of the Vatican's unprecedented sex-abuse summit with the Irish bishops, the prelates are asleep behind the walls at the "conclave hotel" -- the Vatican's Domus Sancta Marthae... ...and in a seeming first since November's Murphy Report, a significant development on the Isle church's latest rattling scandal has come to pass without any backgrounded episcopal commentary. All's not lost, however -- tomorrow's Independent makes much of B16's "body language" supposedly evident at the start of today's marathon 10-hour session: The body language of Pope Benedict when he finally came face to face with the [embattled] Bishop of Galway, Dr Martin Drennan, does not augur well for the former bible scholar named in the Murphy report. The habitually aloof Bishop Drennan is eagerly stooping forward to greet the head of the Catholic Church, who has the sole power to remove him from episcopal office. Note, too, how the usually formal bishop is offering the Pontiff not a steady handshake. His gesture is not really a handshake at all. It is more like a quick finger-grasping greeting, worthy of a Dail politician. But look at the even more significant sign of a less than cordial welcome from the Holy Father. Pope Benedict's frosty stare and searching eyes are those of a boss weighing Bishop Drennan up.... The caption for the pontiff's lips might read: "So you're the guy that has been causing me such trouble." In response, the media-shy Bishop Drennan might respond: "Forgive me Holy Father -- but I have not sinned." But at least Pope Benedict got the opportunity of meeting the evasive prelate from the West of Ireland. In sharp contrast, when Pope Benedict met the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, there was immediate eye contact between them. The German pontiff, who knew Archbishop Martin from his student days in Rome's Teutonic College and often met the young Dublin priest after he joined the Holy See's diplomatic service, looks like a mentor meeting his former pupil. Curling

In honour of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. this month, CHARTattack scoured the interwebs for some music about some of the games sports. After hockey, we Canadians are probably most proud of our dominance in curling. According to the online version of the Canadian Encyclopedia, the first reference to curling in song is The Curling Club Polka by a Mr. Stevenson in 1871. There isnt a single version of this song anywhere on the web. It is probably much like any other polka tune. Too bad Walter Ostanek hasnt covered this song for posterity. As with any sport, curling has a specific set of unique nomiclature for its elements. Along with the use of words like rocks, house, sweep, slide and expressions like hurry! and hard! most recent songs about the sport focus on curling terms and the sports humourous terminology in satirical settings.

Blazers trade

It was rumored all day but ESPN.com reports that is officially a done deal. (EDIT: Well kind of. It might happen.) The Blazers have traded Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw for Marcus Camby. Chad Ford has tweeted that this is a home run for the Blazers. My instant thoughts? Still trying to wrap my little brain around these events. The sudden nature of it breaking combined with that roller coaster ride of an episode of the Bachelor and Im all over the place. I will say this&its definitely a good deal for the Blazers. Far, far better than Tyrus Thomas and UBER-better than anything involving Sasha Vujacic. Camby is perfect for the next 20+ games. Hes a veteran who fills our need (big man/rebounder/defensive presence), will be happy to be out of Clipper hell (hopefully) and we are not sacrificing our future. Also the Blazers are not locking themselves into anything permanent as Cambys contract is set to expire this year as well. Im sure well have more thoughts on Blake and Outlaws depature&and I admit its very weird to see the Trout Era end like this. But, at the end of the day, its been proven that both of these guys are replaceable. If anything this will end the logjam and allow Martell and Batum to grow. Bayless is officially freed and now Camby is our man in the middle.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar

Top Taliban commander captured in secret raid. The Taliban's top military commander has been captured in Pakistan in a joint operation by Pakistani and U.S. intelligence forces, The New York Times reported. Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, described as the No. 2 behind Taliban founder and Osama bin Laden associate Mullah Muhammad Omar, has been in Pakistan's custody for several days... Baradar was captured in Karachi, Pakistan, in a raid by Pakistan's Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, with CIA operatives accompanying the Pakistanis, the Times reported. Pakistan has been leading the interrogation of Baradar, but Americans were also involved, it said. Baradar heads the Taliban's military council and was elevated in the body after the 2006 death of military chief Mullah Akhtar Mohammed Usmani. Baradar is known to coordinate the movement's military operations throughout the south and southwest of Afghanistan. His area of direct responsibility stretches over Kandahar, Helmand, Nimroz, Zabul and Uruzgan provinces. If confirmed, Baradar's arrest would be a major setback for the Taliban. He may also have information on the whereabouts of Omar and bin Laden.

Grand Canyon Suite

Grand Canyon Suite is a suite for orchestra by Ferde Grofe, composed during the period from 1929 to 1931. Paul Whiteman and his band gave the performance of the public for the first time to work, initially titled five photographs of the Grand Canyon, in concert at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago on November 22, 1931. And just to develop a greater sense of the content of this orchestra, and movements of five of the Grand Canyon suite entitled Sunrise, Painted Desert, on the Trail, Sunset and Storm. * Sunrise opens with a representation of the moment of dawn in the valley. A sense of peace is present, and a sense of still air, from a place owned by nature. Mount gradually hear the sun in the sky, even the joy of advertising fullorchestra announce the arrival of the last day a wonderful and exquisite. Two major issues presented music is: The first, announced Piccolo, opens with a four-note motive (s # # everyone B) which will appear later inthe work in various aspects, and the second appears in the strings. After the trill of Piccolo, descending notes that follow reflect the canyon wren call applied on a large scale, but not often seen songbird common in the southwest Valley and the desert. * The Painted Desert is a watercolor of the sensitivity and accuracy of impressive. Grofi runs indicate the presence of some ageless, and change of life still exists in a barren desert with no life in it, and what appears to be the wonderful, and sometimes stunning colors of rock formations, and works of art from prehistoric geological. Ingenious use of ropes for the tone and the orchestra and plentiful. * In the Trail is the best known of the movements of the Grand Canyon Suite, in the report of the ears of the day riding on a donkey pack (imitating the clip clop), and ends with a great start, hee-haw. Cadenza and violinist is used to great effect. The main theme of this movement, which was provided by the centuries, and later, trombone, is a major motivator for the suite. * Sunset is to make the nostalgic and pleasantly sentimental of the most glorious moments of the Grand Canyon, when the sky is alive with vibrant colors over the shadows deepen in the gorge, great. * Storm opens with a sleepy recollection of the subject on the road in the upper strings. Then enter into a combination, a kind of panoramic view of the breadth of this western landscape, with brief references to other subjects inthe work. That this scene comes suddenly dark, and the rush of clouds and wind and altitude. A lone cello solo refers to a state of fear. Evening air is filled with soft sand and hot spare, in the form of a strange violin glissandi slow. Breaks the storm and lightning, thunder and pelting rain. And then more rapidly, it is gold, with another incident of lightning and loud thunder. The moon appears from behind the clouds and the earth rejoice at the pleasure refreshed in the end, climate dramatically.

Sasquatch 2010 lineup

For the past week and a half, Ive been wondering whats going on with the Sasquatch! lineup for 2010. May isnt that far away and despite a few confirmations (Pavement, Miike Snow, Wale, etc.), the Sasquatch! camp had been mostly quiet. That is, until now. This morning, Live Nation sent out a press release stating that for the first time in the festivals history, the lineup will be announced live. The announcement will happen at the Crocodile next Monday, 2/15, with performances by Surfer Blood, Fresh Espresso, and Atlas Sound. Check out the full press release after the jump.

Looking to get drunk? Cant stand those hangovers? Cant handle the taste of alcohol? Then the fine folks at AWOL have a solution for you. Its the AWOL machine. AWOL stands for alcohol without liquid and thats exactly what it is. AWOL vaporizes your liquid shot and turns it into a breathable gas. Since AWOL combines your liquor with oxygen (a supposed hangover cure) and theres no liquid to linger in your body, AWOL provides all the feelings of getting drunk with none of the hangover. Additionally, it says that AWOL will get you drunk quicker and off of less alcohol. It takes about 20 minutes to inhale one shot of AWOL (which came from around 1/2 a shot of any 40 proof liquor). The makers recommend you never have more than 2 20 minute sessions every 24 hours if that gives you an idea of the effects. How much will one of these bad boys set you back? A home kit for the single user is only $299. For commercial use they have a 2 person version for $2595 an da 4 persion for $2895. So is this cool? Will it change alcohol forever? Personally, Im not excited. To me this removes the whole social element of drinking and makes it into a drug like anything else out there. Whatever happened to a classic scotch on the rocks? Do we really need scotch on the vapor?

Olympic torch malfunction

As the world watches Vancouver and Whistler over the next couple of weeks during the Winter Olympics, Cecilia and I are reminded of our swing through Western Canada during our trip there in October 2007. Little known to most Americans, Vancouver sits four hours from one of Canadas top wine growing areas. The Okanagan Valley runs about 150 miles from its northernmost point to the US-Canadian border. If you have the idea that Canada is all "Great White North," you'll be shocked by this area. The southern part is a true desert  the only one in Canada. Even the northern reaches can see temperatures reaching 100 degrees in the summer. Cecilia and I drove from Vancouver to Penticton for a weekend. As we came down from the mountains, the first thing we noticed was the sun. The glorious sun. Seriously, if you've ever been to Vancouver in October, you probably know that sunshine can be in limited supply. (Important life lesson: Taking an hour long stroll through Stanley Park without rain gear during a thirty minute break in the rain is a BAD idea  particularly when the temperature isnt going above 40.) Back to the subject... This is where I was going to tell you about the wonderful wineries in the Okanagan valley. Sadly, I have to report that this was pre-blog and we didnt take very good notes. The wines have all since been consumed, so I cant even pop open a bottle and make something up. This is really as embarrassing as, say, an Olympic torch malfunction. What I will say is that the Okanagan wines we tried were solidly good to great. I dont remember a bad taste in the bunch. The wineries themselves were, for the most part, smaller operations. Of course, there were bigger operations, but if smaller wineries are your thing, youll do quite well. The other thing to note is that only 10% of Okanagan wine leaves Canada. Be prepared to do some exporting on your own. The good news is that the border guards coming back into the United States seem to be a pretty laid back bunch. Cecilia and I brought back half a case -- well over the duty-free limit -- and the border guard just let us through. So tonight, I drink to thee, O Canada. And hopefully, a few Olympic attendees will make that same trip over the mountains. There are some darn good wines awaiting them.

Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams had a Duet during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics 2010, Its magnificent how the two made all the ground excited of the grand opening for this year s Winter Olympics at Vancouver. Both Performers sang a song titled Bang the drum , Which was written by Adams himself. Now here is the catch, a lot of people thought of this performance as an epic fail, They noticed that the artist s where doing a lip sync and that the voices didnt blend in well. We are currently looking for a copy of the video during the opening ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 winter Olympics, Unfortunately we cant find the Nelly Furdao and Bryan Adams Duet video, Once we will we will be posting it here for you to watch. A lot of fans where dismayed by the performance, though it was lively, it was just a horrible performance. IT was obviously an embarrasment to Canada itself. Who will likely be performing at the opening ceremony of 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics on Friday, February 12 have been unveiled. Nelly Furtado and Sarah McLachlan are among the rumored musical guests and reportedly have been spotted at the dress rehearsals for the show. Other suggested performers include Bryan Adams, k.d. Lang and Nikki Yanofsky. Bryan will perform with one of the female singers, k.d. may entertain the audience with one of the singles from her latest album "Recollection", and Nikki is expected to deliver the opening anthem. In addition to the singing performances, the event will also treat sport mania with aerial acrobatics which include skiers or snowboarders jumping through Olympic rings. Formally opened by Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jean, it will begin with the arrival of athletes from every competing country with Team Canada entering the stadium last. Meanwhile, who will be lighting the Olympic cauldron at the aboriginal-themed festivity is yet to be revealed. Rumor has it, hockey legend Wayne Gretzky will come forward for the duty. The opening show will be held at B.C. Place Stadium starting 6 P.M. PST/9 P.M. EST and will be broadcast by NBC. Buoyed by a full Lake Lanier and improving economy, the local boating industry is ready for the 48th annual Atlanta Boat Show. Chris Smith, who owns Banner Rama Custom Boat Lettering with husband Mike, said the 2010 event is a great way b�to get my name out there and drum up business for this year.b� The 10-year-old business is making its first appearance at the show, which runs through Sunday at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Itb�s also Steve Thompsonb�s first time participating, though his company, MarineMax of Georgia, is no stranger to the annual event. The boating giant, which has taken part for more than a decade, has one of the largest displays, said Thompson, who manages the Forsyth County location. The show, he said, b�sets the pace for the new boating season.b� b�Itb�s the start of a new boating season with the Atlanta Boat Show for all the boat dealers in the metro area,b� he said. b�Itb�s kind of the kickoff. Itb�s like the Indy 500 of boating.b� With the drought of 2007-09 and slowing economy, the show posted lower turnouts the past couple years. A year ago, the level of Lanier was 1,056.14 feet above sea level. Wednesday morning, it was at 1,070.44, slightly below full pool of 1,071. Last yearb�s drop-off at the show caused Terry Morrisey to shift his priorities. Though Alex Larsen the Haiti Health Minister estimated death tolls may reach 50,000 to 100,000. The other latest updates suggest something else; around 200,000 people are feared dead. Just have a look at the picture here and feel the pain and agony the poor nation is going through right now. The earthquake that hit the island between Wednesday and Tuesday marked their minds with unforgettable memories for the residents out there and their anger is turning into sheer violence. The process of international help and aid seems to be painfully slow and the picture above leaves a message for the modern world that still theyb�ve got to do a lot. During his Friday press conference Alex Larsen was hopeful that loss of lives may not exceed 100,000 but unfortunately, this seems to be an optimistic statement since hundreds of thousands of people still remain unaccounted for. Each day, there are extremely gloomy pictures coming from the calamity hit area showing the dead bodies piled up in the barren streets of Port-au-Prince, the city capital. Larson further added that at least 1.5 million or more of the residents of small island of Haiti have gone homeless and are forced to live without even basic necessities of life such as shelter, food and medical assistance. Port-au-Prince city sport centers, Larson stated would accommodate the injured ones to provide them with whatever medical assistance available with limited sources. If the reports have to be believed, nearly 70 percent of main Haiti buildings in Port-au-Prince alone have been removed from the scene forever following massive shocks. The list included the Presidential Palace, lots of school buildings, hospitals and many of the government office buildings. As part of StoryCorps' National Day of Listening project, Simon explains how he responds when asked, "Where did I come from?" by his 6-year-old daughter, Elise. Simon and his wife, Caroline, adopted Elise and another daughter, 3-year-old Lena, from China. They've grown up knowing they were adopted and are naturally curious about their birth mother. "We don't conceal any details from our daughters b� they're cunning enough to catch us anyway. But every few months they absorb a little more and the older and smarter they get, the more questions they have for which we have no real answers." So far so good -- they know they are adopted, they feel free to ask their parents questions, their curiosity about their birth parents is natural, and no details are concealed. I wish it could leave it as just a cute story, but I have to mention that the story he tells Elise -- we wanted a family, so we went to China -- is woefully incomplete. He is telling HIS story, not hers. I believe that every (and if you've been reading here for a while you know I hardly EVER say EVERY about anything!) adopted child's story should begin with the child's gestation and birth -- "You grew in your birth mother's tummy until it was time for you to be born." Without this piece of the puzzle, an adopted child can't really know what adoption means. Now, it could be that they talk about that piece, too, but you wouldn't be able to tell that from the audio report, so I felt I had to mention it!
